Accidents
Any accidents on campus must be reported immediately to a staff member. First aid officers are available at every campus in the event that you may require first aid.
Evacuation procedure
Plans to evacuate buildings are displayed in all rooms. Should it be necessary to evacuate buildings a continuous alarm will sound. When the alarm is sounded, you are required to move to the relevant assembly area and to remain there until an all clear signal is given. Refer to the map of your campus for your assembly area. Emergency evacuation drills are carried out on a regular basis.
Lock Down - Code Black
Lockdown is when everyone in the college must stay in one place because it may not be safe to go outside. The threats may be:
- Potentially dangerous or suspicious person on or around the campus
- Severe storm
- Anything else affecting the campus or the safety and well being of staff, students or visitors.
We will hear an announcement over the loud speakers in the classroom or through a megaphone outside.
The command will be "Code Black - please move to classrooms and remain there until advised". This will be repeated several times.
What do we do?
- During Class Time - remain in the classroom, secure all doors and windows, draw curtains/blinds, stay out of view, remain quiet. Mobile phones should be switched off to avoid noise.
- During a Break or Between Classes - go to a classroom or the Research and Information Centre (RIC), secure all doors and windows, draw curtains/blinds, stay out of view, remain quiet. Mobile phones should be switched off to avoid noise.
When it is all over, you will hear another announcement to say all is clear.
Your teacher will advise you of what to do next. If your teacher is not with you during the lock-down, they will come to you in the classroom as soon as they can. You should wait there unless another staff member tells you to do something different.
Throughout the year there will be 'lock-down drills' where we will practise doing this.
Snakes
The institute is located in natural surroundings and has extensive native gardens which may be inhabited by snakes. If you see a snake, contact Facilities through the Customer Care Unit for removal of the snake. Under no circumstances should you approach or touch a snake.
