Entry requirements - becoming a student
The medium of instruction at WideBay TAFE is English. Students must be able to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency before being admitted to a program. This can be achieved by obtaining one of the results show in the table below.

Definitions
Enrolment - Where the student has been issued with a CoE to confirm acceptance by the registered provider and is occupying a place in the CRICOS registered course for which the student was accepted and is progressing towards the completion of the course requirements. The period of enrolment includes scheduled breaks between study periods.
CAE - Cambridge English: Advanced
DIAC - Department of Immigration and Citizenship
EIKEN - National English testing system used in Japan
ELICOS - English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students
IELTS - International English Language Testing System
ISLPR - International Second Language Proficiency Rating
ISU - International Student Unit
PTEA - Pearson Test of English Academic
TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language
Academic Entry Requirements
All Institute courses and programs have specific minimum academic entry requirements. These requirements can be met by one of the following:
- For Certificate II or III: 10 years of schooling, or the equivalent, with passes in mathematics and English
- For Certificate IV or Diploma: 12 years of schooling, or the equivalent, with passes in mathematics and English
- Mature aged entry with relevant work experience
Applicants must provide authorised original documentation or certified copies of their academic certificates.
Mature aged entry may be granted to applicants who can provide evidence of prior work or life experience in an area related to the course. Applicants are required to provide details of the nature and duration of the work undertaken, the level of responsibility and references from employers. Mature age applicants must also satisfy English language requirements.

English Language Requirements
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency before being admitted to any course. For overseas students whose first language is not English, the required minimum English language levels can be one of the following:
- IELTS (Academic)
o Score of 5.5 (with no individual band score less than 5.0)
o Score of 6.0 (with no individual band score less than 5.5) for Nursing or Nursing Package [Academic only] - TOEFL
o Paper based test: score of 530
o Computer based test: score of 195
o Internet based test: score of 75 - ISLPR
o Minimum individual score of 3 - First Cambridge Certificate of English
o 'A' or 'B' Grade - Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English
o 'A' or 'B' Grade - EIKEN
o First Grade - English language experience
o TAFE Queensland Certificate IV in English
o Sound achievement or equivalent in Australian Year 12 English
o Sound achievement in Year 11 and 12 English Communication
o Successful completion of an acceptable formal course (not ELICOS) where the medium of instruction is English in an English speaking country (eg Australia, US, UK, Canada, New Zealand
Student from Assessment Level 3 and 4 countries must meet the DIAC English language and academic eligibility requirements. See www.immi.gov.au
Students who do not meet the above English requirements for direct entry may be offered a package of courses which will include an English pathway.
Special consideration may be given to students who wish to enter certain courses with TAFE Queensland (e.g. An ELICOS General English course for beginners may have no English requirements, in which case literacy in the student's first language would be required). All such cases are subject to approval by the International Business Unit.
Please note:
- Students with alternative English qualifications should send details of these to the International Manager for assessment
- English language test results are valid for the published validity period
- Original documentary evidence or certified copies must be provided
- TAFE Queensland reserves the right to accept or deny entry.
