TAFE high school produces high achievers

Friday, 1 February 2008

Back to school for Year 11 and 12 students at Hervey Bay Campus means no uniforms, calling teachers by their first names and having a restaurant and gym on site.

But teachers at this Wide Bay Institute of TAFE campus in Pialba are quick to point out that last year's OP results demonstrate this high school with a difference is not a place to take it easy.

More than 35 per cent of the Year 12 class of 2007 received an OP of ten or greater.

The Hervey Bay Campus is the only high school facility in the Wide Bay that offers students a choice to study vocational subjects and Queensland Certificate of Education subjects simultaneously.

Emma Barker, who received an OP2 last year, says Hervey Bay Campus students are taught to be self-disciplined.

"You're in smaller classes and treated like an adult, which for me, meant I learnt some pretty important skills for life."

Her long time goal has been police forensic analysis and she was accepted for a Bachelor degree studying Criminology and Criminal Justice subjects at Griffith University.

Principal Allan Perry said the beauty of the new QCE was that students could plan their own vocational or academic pathway in a mix which suited them so they exited Year 12 with a QCE and a vocational qualification.

"Students get a head start with their career while still studying for their QCE," Mr Perry said.

"When they graduate from Year 12 many Hervey Bay Campus students fast track TAFE programs and end up reducing Diploma courses by a year. That allows our students to soar ahead in their chosen career," Mr Perry said.

Places are still available for 2008 at Hervey Bay Campus. For more information contact: 1300 656 188
