Strong job demand for female security officers

Friday, 1 February 2008

Job demand for female security officers is extremely high throughout Queensland, according to teachers at the Wide Bay Institute of TAFE Security Training Campus.

TAFE offers a range of programs for security officers, risk assessors, investigators and traffic controllers at its Browns Plains specialist training facility in Brisbane.

Business Development Manager, Iris Roberts says there is a misconception that security work is a man's job but she finds many employers prefer women because they have attributes bosses are looking for.

"I had a recent request from one Barrier Reef Resort that specifically wanted female security officers because they are thought to be better at dealing with guests," Ms Roberts said.

She also encounters many employers who want both males and females in their security teams to compliment each other.

"I'm continually getting calls from desperate employers in the security industry who tell us there's just so many vacancies out there for women," she said.

TAFE's Certificate II short program in Security Operations has proved a particularly popular one for women who have been unemployed for a long time or are looking to re-enter the workforce.

In a joint effort with TAFE, Mission Australia recently sponsored nine students to complete the program at its north Brisbane office with WideBay TAFE sending a teacher to conduct the two weeks of training.

"The outcome was a win-win for everyone. All the students found jobs," Ms Roberts said.

"Everyone on the course was surprised they found a job so quickly but that's not at all unusual, given the shortfall of female officers in the security industry."

The average job placement rate for all security programs at Browns Plains Campus is 97 per cent.
